Wednesday Night Worship Speaker

Rev. Elbert McGowan, Jr.

Elbert serves as the Senior Pastor of Redeemer Church, PCA. Redeemer is an intentionally multiethnic community church located in the heart of Jackson, Mississippi. Elbert was raised in Jackson. The crack cocaine epidemic and the violence that came with it, touched his life. He left Mississippi in 1996, with no intention on ever returning to live, in order to attend Alabama A&M University. After earning a BS in Mechanical Engineering, he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to work for General Electric Aircraft Engines. In Ohio, Jesus rescued him. Around this same time, many of his family members at “home” were being saved by Christ. His parents stumbled upon and joined a PCA church in Jackson (Trinity). In 2004, he and his bride (Karen) felt God’s call back to Jackson. He resigned from GE and enrolled in RTS Jackson and became a pastoral intern at Redeemer Church, which was a church plant under the leadership of Rev. Mike Campbell. In 2007, Elbert and Karen, both graduates of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (Alabama A&M, Stillman College, Florida A&M University) felt called to start RUF at one – Jackson State University. He served as the RUF Campus Minister at JSU for 9 years. In 2016, he became the Senior Pastor of Redeemer. Elbert and his lovely wife of 18 years have two biological children, Karis (15) and Tripp (12), four of whom they hope to meet in glory, and hundreds of former students who are now adulting and still following Jesus.
