Resonance and the Psalms: Faithful Limits in a Control-Driven Age

Modern life tells us the good life comes from having more under control. In reality, it often leaves us hurried, anxious, and spiritually dull. This seminar draws on sociologist Hartmut Rosa’s idea of “resonance” to argue that our weariness comes from trying to control what was never ours to control. Scripture offers a different way of life—one shaped by listening and response rather than mastery. The Psalms show this way with particular clarity. As songs and prayers rooted in human limits and God’s sovereignty, they train us to live with rightly ordered control and deeper connection. The Psalms give us not a method to manage life, but a rhythm for meeting the living God.
